Cathy Hetznecker Rag Rugs, Cathy Hetznecker

Cathy HetzneckerI began making rugs several years ago after finding a rag rug on display in a fabric shop while on a family vacation. My reaction to the rug was a visceral one – I had been looking for something to occupy my hands while I cared for my two young daughters and had taken a long hiatus from my work as a potter for the previous decade and more. The rugs seemed to satisfy my interest in texture, functionality, color – and most of all ease of creating.

There are countless ways to make rag rugs. I create mine in a very traditional manner using strips of fabric and a large crochet hook. Each rug is truly unique in color and fabric choices, size and shape. The fun begins as I sort through the endless possibilities of color and fabric combinations and then come up with the shape and size of the rug and it’s place in the home.  My reversible rag rugs are made of washable cotton or wool and can be machine washed on the delicate cycle and dried outside on a warm, sunny, day. The rugs are most often used as scatter rugs to be used bedside in a nursery, library, powder room, study or kitchen. Size ranges are endless, but generally are in the 2’ x 3’ to 4’ x 5’ range.

My rugs can be made as squares, rectangles, circles or ovals. Custom orders are encouraged, but because of the time involved in making the rugs, I make only a limited number each year. Please contact me by e-mail if you are interested in commissioning your own rug!
